☽Lunar phases
The changing portion of the Moon’s sunlit half that we see from Earth.
The physical explanation
The Sun lights half the Moon. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see different amounts of that illuminated half: growing through the waxing phases, then shrinking through the waning phases. Ordinary phases are not caused by Earth’s shadow; that is involved in a lunar eclipse. The percentage in the sky view describes the illuminated portion of the Moon’s apparent disc.

Some modern Western astrologers associate waxing phases with growth and waning phases with reflection. These are symbolic associations, separate from the geometry of sunlight.
